Why Should Houses have All the Fun?

By Nexrise on Apr 24th, 2019

Let’s break some myths, shall we? Since time immemorial we have heard the tips that turn a house into a home. But we are millennials who like to be creative without spending too much time or money on maintaining our living spaces. Let’s scream together, as you would in a karaoke night, that apartments make life easier. And there are enough ideas and resources available for a quirky apartment that allow plenty of time for Netflix on weekends.

Starting from the basics is not the first rule. Identifying the absolute essentials and getting rid of the unnecessary, boring items is. Making more space in the apartment will not only let positive energy flow in but also give you a wider scope to play around with ideas and shop the beauties that have been sitting in your head for months.

A smart way to approach this would be to think like a guest visiting your place for the first time and then taking over as a host to determine needs. We are thinking of the entrance! What’s on or around your main door? There’s a reason we have trailers, right! An excellent looking doormat, a house plant in a beautiful planter, a small Ganesha idol or a cute hanging on or beside the door are essential entrance decor elements. You could get a customized nameplate in wood, metal or stone and hang a money veil downwards. Come on in now!

Your living room entrance may have a shoe rack and an ottoman to sit on because.. laces and buckles! On top of the shoe rack can be candles, a vase, a statue or low-maintenance real plants like bamboos. The adjacent wall can have a key holder and a mirror, depending on the height of your shoe rack.

We can’t help but focus first on what not to do. Please don’t overdo wood and color palettes on the walls. Let them breathe, adorn them with artifacts that can be changed and given a company. To explain this better, we are not against colors; we love colors! But colors are better added through free items like wall hangings, cushion covers, curtains, vases and table accessories instead of rainbow walls. Also, mixing and matching is more comfortable with neutral walls. Instead of having several little things on a wall unit, invest in one statement piece. Throw in a monochrome or a bohemian rug, depending on your color scheme and choice. Do not copy another home you liked; reflect your personality. Whether it is regional art from your travel, candid photographs of family and friends, handwritten or printed quotes for word nerds or vinyl records for music lovers, let your imagination flow.

Do keep the weather in mind while choosing upholstery. The main seating can either face a free view, a beautiful wall or the television. Lighting can either enhance or kill the look. You do not need expensive lamps, go local! Cane or jute lamps are reasonable as well as eco-friendly. Keep one reading light and the remaining, warm ambient lights. Do not clutter your dining table with unnecessary things. If you have elaborate dining demands, keep an approachable cabinet that can store crockery and the top can serve as the second table. You can use all in one stand for paper napkins, cutlery and toothpicks to save space. Invest in chic table mats and a small table plant/vase or a beautiful water bottle in glass or ceramic to add vibrancy. You can hang a painting or printed ceramic plates on the wall next to your dining. Let’s not forget ceiling lamps for an Insta worthy photograph of your next party.

Most apartments have a balcony attached to their sitting room and it pains our heart to see it ignored. No matter how small, you can always make it the most beautiful corner of your home. Plants are a no brainer, ensure low maintenance ones to let the greenery live long. Hang a lamp or three, get a soothing windchime in wood or metal. Throw in fairy lights on a birdcage, keep a bright stool, candles, a rocking chair or a swing. Add outdoor friendly art on the walls. A faux grass foot mat with your chair or swing can add an illusion of greenery. Want more? Dream catchers, hanging plants, floral or bird patterns can make the otherwise dull terrace oh so lively! These pocket-friendly items can instantly turn your patio into a perfect coffee or wine corner.

The small corridors that take you from the sitting and dining area towards the bedrooms can be used as photo galleries, hobby museum, a cool bar, reading corner, a spiritual connection or any contemporary idea under the sun. It does not have a specific function so you can do anything that your heart desires. We have shared through images what we haven’t shared in words. Remember, there are no rules! You can mix colors as creatively as you can mix materials and inspirations. Traditional items can give your modern furniture an edge, just like geometric fixtures can balance random pieces. There’s nothing like too much art.

Wait for a separate post for bedrooms to address personal needs and comfort. Let us know in the comments if you want us to do a separate post on indoor plants, do not forget to mention your city for us to know the weather. Till our next post, keep it simple, keep it stylish!

Happy living!
